Verdad
Wine Cellars
Verdad's mission is to make small amounts of delicious
wines using the highest quality Spanish grape varietals in California
with organic growing techniques. The goal is to make wines which express
the true flavors of the varietal and the terroir in which they're grown.
Louisa Sawyer Lindquist is the inspiration behind Verdad. In the late
80’s, Louisa became enamored with the beauty and finesse of Spanish
Albariño and Tempranillo while studying and working at a vineyard in
Long Island. She became amazed at the similarities between the Spanish
wine country and California and introduced the beauties of Spanish wines
to then boyfriend, Bob Lindquist, the owner/winemaker of Qupé Wine
Cellars. They began planting small blocks of Albariño and Tempranillo at
the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley on the Central Coast
of California, experimenting with clones and organic growing techniques.
As the plantings matured and began to produce fruit, Louisa went to Spain to work harvest. As she talked with the people across the country, she was inspired by one of their favorite and frequently repeated expressions, “es la VERDAD” (that’s the truth). The wines are produced at Qupé under the direction of Bob, now Louisa’s husband.
